Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Source: American Dietetic Association (ADA).

The good news is that you can lower your risk of heart disease by eating healthy and being active.

  1. Adding fiber to your diet can lower the level of total cholesterol (high cholesterol levels are major risk factors of heart disease) in your body. Fiber acts like a sponge and binds with cholesterol in the blood. It can then be passed through the intestines as waste instead of clogging arteries. Drink plenty of water to aid in digestion.
  2. Get enough folic acid (folates) in your diet. “Because of their control over homocysteine, an amino acid produced by the body, folates are thought to give some protection against heart disease. High levels of homocysteine in the blood may be a risk factor for heart attacks,” according to the Wheat Foods Council. Folic acid has also been linked to reduction in depression, as well as colon, cervical, and breast cancers. It may also help prevent memory loss and susceptibility to Parkinson’s disease.

Heart Health Tips

  1. Cut back on saturated fats and trans fats. Less than 10 percent of daily calories should come from saturated fat. Both of these fats can raise cholesterol and lead to heart disease.
  2. Maintain a healthy weight and Body Mass Index (BMI)—the risk for heart disease may be higher if you are overweight or obese. Also, having a high concentration of body fat around your abdomen may increase your risk of heart disease.
  3. The USDA suggests you aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a day. Individuals should consult a health care provider for help in designing a safe physical activity program.
